"Mastering Self-Leadership: The Real Secret to Real Estate Success"
Oct 22, 2023
Hello everyone! My name is Dustin Olverson, and I have been deeply involved in real estate investing for a little over four years. In that time, I've ventured into uncharted territory, purchasing, flipping, selling, and wholesaling over 200 houses. When I began, I had little to no experience, but today I stand proud of the success I've achieved, not just for myself but for my partners, friends, and family as well. One question that keeps cropping up about my journey is, "How did you get here so fast?" It's a question I've pondered over the years, and as I've reflected on my challenging journey, I've found the answer: self-leadership.
Understanding Self-Leadership:
Self-leadership is the practice of taking charge of your own life, behaviors, and actions. It's about being the CEO of your personal and professional development. While I received extensive training as a military leader, the real key to success is mastering the leadership of oneself. I had to invest time in self-improvement, focusing on my own growth, rather than constantly looking outward to lead others.
The Impact of Self-Leadership on My Real Estate Journey:
Real estate investing is inherently a people business. It's not just about convincing others to invest in your deals; it's about selling yourself as a reliable, trustworthy, and capable person. Over the years, I've received numerous comments about my consistency, leadership, work ethic, discipline, temperament, mindset, honesty, and confidence. These qualities are areas I've continuously worked on to become a better leader of myself. This, in turn, has allowed me to scale my real estate business more effectively.
Overcoming Weaknesses:
Starting out, my greatest areas of weakness were pride, ego, and self-esteem. I quickly realized that these traits could be deal killers in the real estate business. Learning to let go of these attributes and work on my weaknesses was a pivotal moment in my journey.
Practices for Self-Leadership:
Here are some practices that have helped me become a better leader of myself:
1. Minding My Own Business: I stopped focusing on how others operate their organizations and instead dedicated my energy to running my own. This shift in focus has been instrumental in my growth.
2. Continuous Learning: Reading more and asking questions about myself that I was not aware of has been a game-changer. Seeking honest feedback on my strengths and areas for improvement has greatly impacted my journey.
The Transformative Power of Self-Leadership:
As you become a better leader of yourself, your approach to conducting business undergoes a significant transformation. Your levels of wealth and the caliber of people you'll do business with will rapidly shift.
In conclusion, the journey of self-leadership is the true key to success in real estate investing. By investing in yourself, you can overcome weaknesses, and become a better person and a more influential businessperson. The next time you look in the mirror, remember that the answer to what's standing in your way as a real estate investor might be right there, waiting for you to take charge. Self-leadership will propel you toward your goals, and the future holds boundless opportunities for those who dare to lead themselves to success.
